Skills and Training Development Programme
by Project SMILE | Grant Amount Awarded: $25,000
Project SMILE Limited is a volunteer-led non-profit organisation serving low-income women and women aged 50 and above, many of whom face intersecting challenges of financial insecurity, limited education, and social isolation. These barriers often restrict access to employment opportunities and undermine confidence, independence, and social participation.
The SMILE Skills and Training Development Programme was developed to address these challenges holistically. With a $25,000 grant from the SCIF, the programme ran for 19 months, providing practical, employment-oriented training alongside personal development and social support. Activities included sewing and arts-and-crafts training, motivational sessions, mental health awareness talks, and workshops on positive parenting and smart money management.
As a direct result of the programme, beneficiaries gained tangible skills and confidence. Many participants were able to earn modest income by selling products such as reusable face masks, cloth pouches, and cushion covers. Others benefited from basic e-commerce training, which introduced them to digital selling and marketing, serving as an important first step toward entrepreneurship. Beyond economic outcomes, the programme fostered improved communication skills, self-esteem, and peer connections, helping to reduce social isolation among participants.
The programme also strengthened Project SMILE as an organisation. It contributed to the organisation attaining IPC status, expanding its volunteer base, and deepening partnerships with Family Service Centres and corporate partners. These developments have laid a strong foundation for future programmes. Support from the SCIF has enabled Project SMILE to continue empowering women with skills, confidence, and a renewed belief in their ability to contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.
